Learning Target I can construct scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities through a targeted practice on Freckle.com Learning Target I can interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities through a targeted practice on Freckle.com Learning Activity Today we will be delving into a type of mathematics called Statistics and Probabilities. As I can almost hear the groans and feel the eye rolls from many of you as you read this, I assure you that this is a type of mathematics that many of you may already be using or are familiar with without even realizing. For all our football fans, how many of you can tell me the number of touchdown passes the quarterback of your favorite team has thrown last year or over the course of his career, or the running back's total rushing yards, or even the number of tackles of a defensive lineman? As football fans, we must recognize that "football is a game of numbers, and the study of statistics is essential for analyzing and understanding the game." (Statistics in Football). As fans we use statistics to measure how well our team is doing. Players use statistics to understand their personal strengths and areas that need growth. Coaches use statistics to determine goal performance for their current players, identify strengths and weakness of opposing teams, and identify possible recruiting talents. Statistics and Probabilities is not exclusive to football or sports. It is also used in many government agencies to analyze data; science and medical studies on interventions and health; psychology in studies of human behavior; and education to evaluate teaching strategies, students performance, and assessments. In our exploration of Statistics and Probabilities in the 8th grade, you will investigate patterns of association in bivariate data. You will begin with watching videos on constructing and interpreting scatter plots for bivariate measurement data below. Then you will complete a short targeted practice on constructing and interpreting scatter plots on USA TestPrep called "Construct and Interpret Scatter plots."
